Alaska Airlines has made a pretty major announcement, the livery, logo and really entire brand is being redesigned. After a year long process, they announced the new color scheme and look for the entire airline. Starting with the delivery of 4 new 737 aircraft in February, the new plane livery will start to roll out across the fleet throughout 2016. Quickly on the the heels of the livery changes starting, the updates to airport branding will also begin. Airports will update kiosks, ticketing areas and boarding gates among other items. By the end of the year, all of the updates should be completed.
Updates to the Alaska Airlines livery have been along time coming, 25 years since the last update the brand was definitely in need of a refresh. Honestly though, Alaska Airlines never struck me as an outdated livery until I looked at in contrast to the new design. This is a bit odd to me that Alaska passed under my radar, since I've been harping on a few airlines in the recent past to update their livery.
Air India is one that comes to mind quickly, the livery on those aircraft is appalling and really needs to come to this century, the design looks to be almost 50 years old at this point... just judging on the era it looks to have come out of. Cathay Pacific was one until a few months ago I would have told you needed to revisit their design as well, but they have already started a refresh. There is, however, a balance to refreshing while still keeping your brand history. In this area, I'd say that Cathay Pacific has failed, they were trying too hard to hold onto tradition and in turn seem to have done too little with their update... of course that's just how I see it, others may like the new brand.
I'd have to say that Alaska Airlines did a great job of finding that happy middle ground. Up until now, I have not liked the Alaska Airlines Eskimo, but there is some history to that logo. When Alaska Airlines attempted to get rid of the Eskimo logo in the past, there was some pretty heavy resistance and he remained. While I'm still not a huge fan of it, the new design really does a great job of incorporating the Eskimo into the design and I actually like the way it was updated.
Overall I'm a sucker for livery and design updates so I'm really excited to see these new design tweaks to roll out to the fleet. Hey who knows, maybe my trip to Hawaii will be on a plane with the new livery.
